Happy Holiday Season!

There is so much joy in the air. I recently found myself smiling as I was shopping in Trader Joe's because of the Christmas music and fun selection of holiday plants. There was hustle and bustle and the lines were long. What a great sign! At a breakfast meeting that I attended someone said it beautifully, 'I decided that I am not going to participate in the recession.' So, this holiday season decide to be joyful. Allow the simple things to make you smile.

The Staff at Hi5 Produce want to wish you a Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas.

Nutrition Tip for the Holidays:

The holidays are the time for family, food and fun so don't let the idea of eating healthy ruin your festivities. The secret for this holiday season is moderation, balance and consciousness.

Go for your favorite dessert or mashed potatoes - in moderation! Serve yourself your favorite foods in small amounts and eat slowly savoring each bite. The day of gorging is over. The days of diets that make you starve are also over.

Balance out what you eat this year. On Thanksgiving we ate so much food that on Friday afternoon I balanced it out with a beautiful salad for lunch and a lentil and vegetable soup for dinner. Ensure that you replenish the diuretic affects of coffee by drinking one glass of water for every cup of coffee.

We tend to prepare the same way our parents did in the past. In some cases that is good and in some not so good - consciousness is recognizing the difference. When you fill your plate at a buffet table look at what you have and make sure there is a selection of live foods such as a variety of vegetables. The vegetables will help with digestion by providing enzymes, water, fiber, and vitamins.

Start your own eating traditions this year with a special salad, sliced tomatoes with lemon, or a fancy herbal tea. A large array of vegetables will also make your holiday table beautiful. Eating is one of the best parts of the holiday time. By eating in moderation, balancing your foods and choosing what you buy and what you put on your plate consciously you can enjoy the blessings food has to offer.

Fitness Tip from TFL -Train for Life:

This is great time to fit exercise into your schedule. Don’t wait until January! Exercise has several benefits besides weight loss and muscle building. This time of year most people are putting their digestive systems into terrible shock with the quantity and quality of foods we are eating. For many of us we are getting plugged up!! Exercise will get those bowels moving. Exercise is a great detoxifier. Sweat out all the toxins. The lymphatic system, which is like our sewage system, has no pump like a heart or any valves. The lymphatic system relies on gravity and movement to keep it running efficiently. The final great reason to exercise NOW is because YES the holiday rush can be stressful and tiring. We must be at our best with plenty of energy. Exercise has a natural endorphin affect that will decrease stress and release chemicals that will give you more energy. So, this month schedule your workouts and make it the most energetic year ever.

Fall and the 4th Quarter

It's that time of the year again. The leaves are turning the color of bosc pears, persimmons, and gala apples. The weather is cooling and the sunlight is rationing out its shine. New beanies and coats fill the retail racks and the prime television thrives. The holidays whisper their presence with pumpkins on porches and Turkeys on dining tables, then shout their strength with flashing lights on rooftops and fragrant trees growing in living rooms. They call it fall. I call it the first sight of the finish line. The 4th quarter in the game we play every year. The final lap of the calendar.

At Hi5 Produce, we believe in finishing strong. Sure the warm nights and white nectarines were great, but that time has passed, and in this season of change we are dedicated to the task of making this transition just a little bit easier for all of our friends and associates. We want YOU to finish strong. That's why this holiday season we are offering all of our corporate customers reduced prices on all Hi5 Gift Baskets. This way, everyone is able to get healthy, stay healthy, and give health to others. This was our mission when we started this company 10 years ago and it is still our mission today.

Ask your delivery driver for more information, or give us a call at (408) 778-6476.
Let's finish out the year strong and earn those celebratory fireworks on New Year's Eve!

Did you know that fresh fruit has the natural ability to hydrate and nourish your cells, give you energy, and boost your immune system? That is the power for a high fruit and vegetable diet. It is not a trend or fad. Eating a diet high in fresh fruits can even ward off some the negative affects of your environment and other unhealthy choices.

Sometimes we begin a good habit and after awhile forget why it is important. Yes choosing that apple over the donut or bag of chips can have a profound positive benefit. Maybe you don't see or feel it immediately, but over time, making positive health choices always pays off. Optimal health is achieved by the small choices we make everyday that have an accumulated affect over time.

Hi5 Produce is and always will be here to "help people eat healthy on a consistent basis and make positive health choices." Cheers to your health!!

Hi5 Nutrition Tip:

1) Mince a generous amount of garlic and add to skillet with a small amount of olive oil.

2) Cut chicken into bite size pieces and add to skillet. Add soy sauce and a very small amount of balsamic for enhanced flavor. Cook until chicken is fully cooked.

3) While the chicken is cooking, chop the lettuce, cucumbers, red bell peppers, tomatoes, and carrots. For added fun, add apple or mango chunks. We always add a generous amount of pecans, sunflower seeds or another favorite nut to make it a more hardy meal.

4) Prepare the special salad dressing. Using the cruet bottle, add balsamic vinegar to the ’W’ line. Then add olive oil to the ’O’ line. Pour in the dry Italian seasoning and shake well. Toss into salad just before eating.

5) In our home, we like to keep the chicken separate so each person can add the chicken over their own salad. This is a good idea because the chicken is usually still warm.

Enjoy!! Even the kids will like it!

April 2008

Thank you for sharing the vision of healthy eating with us at Hi5 Produce. I only get the opportunity to deliver to a few companies on Monday mornings and it is such a pleasure. Everyone is always so excited to receive their fruit. Some make the announcement "the fruits here" when they see me with my box. Some people talk to me about their favorite fruit and others ask questions. Although, most places I quietly slip in and slip out I do hope you know that we carefully choose and display your fruit selection. Be on the look out for delicious strawberries from Chiala Farms. Because they come straight from the Morgan Hill/Hollister area you receive them the day after they are picked. Now that's fresh!

Enjoy your fruit the benefits will amaze you!

Did you know you can send the same delicious fruit as a gift anywhere in the United States? Check out the gift basket and gift box at www.hi5produce.com.

TFL - Train for Life Fitness Tip:

I love going to the hair salon because I get to catch up on all the magazines that I normally don’t get a chance to read. Today, I read an article about aerobic exercise and the long term affects on cognitive function. The article offered wonderful case studies and tests to show that aerobic exercise actually generates a chemical that is used at the nerve endings (synapsis) in the brain. In particular, there was a high concentration of this chemical in the frontal lobe of the brain, which is responsible for multi tasking and short term memory.

Researchers also examined the cognitive affects of stretching and weight training. Although very beneficial in other areas tests showed little affect on the brain chemicals for anaerobic weight training and stretching. Aerobic exercise takes more oxygen to the brain, helps the body get rid of toxins, and now we know we can get smarter.

So let’s get that body moving! I recently took a Zumba class which was so much fun. Zumba is an aerobic class set to Latin music incorporating a blend of many different Latin style dance moves. Fun Fun Fun!!

Nutrition Tip:

Simple meal from our kitchen to yours. If you haven’t switched to wheat pasta let me give you that boast of encouragement. Whole wheat pasta is a good source of protein and fiber. We purchase the Trader Joe's brand, which contains 8 grams of protein 5 grams of fiber, and no saturated fat. The taste is excellent! It is very important that our meals provide an abundance of nutrition so we are not left hungry, which causes us to want to eat too much. Add to that a green salad with balsamic dressing and you have a complete meal in minutes. Best of all you can feel confident that you offered your family a healthy home cooked meal.

March 2008
As we hit the last stretch of the winter months, you can feel spring in the air. This is the time when we get teased with sporadic sunny days. Before winter ends, take time to enjoy the wonderful winter fruit. There is such great variety in the pears, apples and citrus. Hi5 Produce has been providing six different types of pears and five different apples. Explore your delivery in the next few weeks and see what kind of variety you find.

Many of you have been receiving Hi5 Produce deliveries for over ten years. In that time, our mission for Hi5 Produce has never changed - to help people eat healthy on a consistent basis’. We still take pride in delivering fresh quality produce to your workplace.

People are telling us that the fruit helps get rid of mid day sluggishness. We have heard that eating fruit before lunch will curb the appetite and cause one to eat less junk. We would love to hear what you think!

E-mail me directly denise@hi5produce.com. Please let me know if we can post your comment on our website.

In this newsletter we would like to introduce you to our sister company. The company is TFL or Train for Life. We believe that good nutrition and fitness go hand in hand. TFL has been exclusively a personal training studio for several years and will now become a 15,000 square foot multiple sport training facility. We will keep you informed of the Grand Opening!

TFL Fitness Tip:
Balance exercises have become very popular because being off balance forces you to incorporate small muscle groups that are usually not used in isolated linear exercises. Balance exercises help strengthen the core abdominal muscles. The best benefit is injury prevention. Most of our injuries occur in our daily simple activities such as reaching for something, tripping, or bending over. When you do exercises in an imbalanced state your large and small muscles get stronger and remember how to react. Muscle memory is an amazing thing! So when you are thrown off balance in a daily activity your muscles will know how to react to counter the fall or injury.

You can get a large exercise ball at any sport store. If you are unfamiliar with the exercise ball pick up a DVD or book that shows some exercises. Some secrets to having a large exercise ball in your home: a life savor in the middle of the night when you have a crying baby. Hold the baby and bounce! The ball is also an incredible tool for stretching a tired and aching back. Bouncing on the ball is also a great way to stimulate the lymphatic system and help with detoxification. So watch your favorite TV show while bouncing on the ball. The uses are endless.

Hi5 Health Tip:
Get out and breathe the fresh air! Take a walk, hike or bike ride. The Bay Area has fabulous walking paths. San Francisco in particular has designated walking paths that are beautiful. A simple walk that has a spectacular view is Twin Peaks in San Francisco near Noe Valley. Not only is it a great little walk, but very serene as it overlooks the Pacific Ocean, the city of San Francisco, Marin County, the Bay, and Daly City.

Walking is a great way to get your body fit and your mind relaxed. What a perfect way to de-stress. Stress is our body's way of coping with intensity of our day to day life. Stress itself is a physiological response that is very effective under pressure, but leaves a toxic chemical residue afterward. The way to rid your body of these dangerous toxins is to breathe deeply and consistently, drink water, exercise and establish a mindset of gratitude. Walking just might be your remedy!
